Book cover re-design

Recently I have asked my author friends on Facebook if they would like to get a cover re-design free of charge including unlimited revisions. Within a few minutes, my inbox was packed with a bunch of questions and all kinds of covers. Being a cover designer all these years, I think I have heard all the possible reasons why book sales aren’t doing well. But the one authors mention the most, is the cover design. Why are so many authors unhappy with their cover design? 

Sometimes a good and professionally done cover doesn’t necessarily warrant sales success. What you need to be aware of, is your target audience and presentation! The detection of this point is definitely something the author needs to ensure. You have to give specific instructions to the designer. She/he needs to know what elements are a must on the cover and what reader group you want to attract. Everything else is her or his job. One additional important step is to leave the designing to the designer. Every author should provide the necessary information, as well as give inputs and ideas, however, please, oh please, listen to your cover designer. Remember, cover designers are in touch with publishers, publishing platforms and vendors frequently if not even on a daily basis. In order to avoid unnecessary re-designs, try not to interfere with the design process too much and choose a professional cover designer. 

1. Detect the problem. - Your book isn’t selling and you think the cover is to blame? Change it. But make sure the real reason isn’t something inside the book. This is a great opportunity to make changes to your manuscript as well.

2. Hire a good cover designer who will help you detect the previous covers problems. Listen to your designer and create a plan on how to make things work.

3. Make it audience-appropriate. Do your homework and take your time to investigate what makes people buy these kinds of books.

4. Promote your “new” product. While getting your new cover, don’t sit and wait, think of new ways to advertise your book and take advantage of the time you have to improve your marketing strategy. Ask your designer to create marketing materials for you and be active on social media.

If you follow these simple steps, your success is guaranteed. Don’t forget that the most important part of this whole process, is you! Believe in yourself and your piece of art.

If you aren’t happy with it, change it, make it better, until you are 100% happy with it. You only live once, so do it right!
